SMC is a preventive strategy. It involves administering a combination of two antimalarial drugs—Sulphadoxine Pyrimethamine and Amiodiaquine (SPAQ)—to children aged three to 59 months. The drugs are given during the rainy season to prevent malaria. This method has proven effective in protecting young children, who are the most vulnerable.
In 2023, Kogi State administered SMC drugs to 1.2 million children. Over 6.3 million doses were distributed. This large-scale effort was supported by the State Malaria Elimination Programme (SMEP), Malaria Consortium, World Health Organization (WHO), and other partners.
Future Goals and Ongoing Efforts
Looking ahead, the target for SMC implementation in Kogi State for 2024 is to reach 1,184,652 children. The project has already exceeded expectations during the June and July cycles. There are plans to increase coverage further in the upcoming August and September cycles.
The program’s success in Kogi State is due to the full support of the Kogi Government. Their involvement has been crucial in ensuring the effective distribution and administration of SMC drugs.

During the recent briefing, Orimodu Matthew, Director of Health Educator Advocacy at Kogi SMEP, emphasized the role of media in increasing awareness. He urged the media to promote behavioral change. The media should correct misconceptions about malaria and encourage the public to participate in preventive measures, including taking the free SMC drugs.
Personnel and Resource Allocation
The success of the SMC project in Kogi State is also due to the extensive personnel involved. A total of 14,255 individuals were engaged across 747 health facilities in the state. This coordinated effort ensured that the preventive measures reached every corner of Kogi State.
