Police and Gunmen Clash in Anambra

Some armed men, believed to be members of a cult group, engaged in a firefight with security forces that lasted about an hour.

The incident occurred late Saturday in Aguleri community in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Aguleri is the hometown of former governor of the state, Chief Willie Obiano.

The gunmen were said to have invaded the community and started shooting before the police stormed the area and both parties engaged in a gun battle.

The reason for the raid could not be determined, but sources in the area said the youths were heading towards a police station in the community before they were repulsed by police officers.

No one was killed, but some police officers and members of the armed gang were injured in the shooting, they said.

No fewer than 15 people have been arrested so far and are in custody, police said.

State police spokesman Toochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident and said the situation had been brought under control.
