Nigerian Navy Offers Free Medical Care to Ijora Community in Lagos

As part of its 61st anniversary celebration, the Nigerian Navy provided free medical services to over 300 residents of the Ijora community in Lagos. The program reflects the military’s commitment to supporting and uplifting the lives of civilians through meaningful community engagement.

The exercise included free medical consultations, distribution of essential drugs, and comprehensive HIV/AIDS screening. Residents of all ages and backgrounds turned up in large numbers to benefit from this initiative.

Surgeon Commander Ugowchi Nzeribe of the Western Naval Command supervised the outreach. She explained that the Nigerian Navy sees healthcare not only as a basic human right but also as a powerful tool for building strong civil-military relationships.

“As part of our corporate social responsibility, we believe it’s important to step into communities and contribute meaningfully, especially in areas where access to healthcare is limited,” she said. “These programs offer more than medical treatment; they build trust and help us connect with people who may not usually have personal contact with the military.”

Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas, the Chief of Naval Staff, also emphasized the importance of such outreach programs. He noted that the Nigerian Navy hopes to improve public health while strengthening cooperation and understanding between the military and civilians.

Many beneficiaries expressed gratitude, acknowledging that medical care can often be expensive or out of reach. For some residents, this program offered their first medical assessment in years.

This initiative is one of several ways the Nigerian Navy has given back to society over the years. Through humanitarian projects like this, the Navy continues to demonstrate commitment beyond defending Nigeria’s coastlines — showing compassion and service to the people it protects.
