Hold your institution accountable for your admission letter, JAMB says students

ABUJA- THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has urged students to hold their institutions accountable for not providing access to their admission letters.

JAMB said the advice to students was based on a number of complaints from students that their enlistment in the mandatory National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, was being delayed by the late issuance of their admission letters.

JAMB, in a statement on Thursday by its Head of Media, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, said the issuance of admission letters to students could only be facilitated by the uploading of students’ data by the schools.

The statement said, “The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has been made aware of complaints by some candidates that they have not received their admission letters that would qualify them for the one-year compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) or that they have received exemption letters.

“This phenomenon is especially true for the products of unannounced illegal institutional admissions conducted outside the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) between 2017 and 2020.

“The series of complaints arose from the frustration of this group of students who express their anger at the lack of formal recognition of their degrees by the relevant authorities.

“Consequently, the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, had approved a final acquiescence to these underhanded admissions out of compassion.

Psalm 121:7-8
"Give thanks to the Lord for He is good: His love endures forever."

“It will be recalled that as a result of this act of generosity, the committee had placed relevant advertisements in three national dailies (Blueprint, Guardian and Vanguard) dated November 24, 2021.

“The same ad was posted on the Committee’s website, along with an easy-to-use guide issued to all colleges to inform them on how to withdraw these candidates.

“Based on available data, nearly one million unreported illegal university admissions have been uncovered to date. What is surprising, however, is that to date, less than 5% of these students have been uploaded to the Board’s portal by institutions as required.

“Even more egregious is the fact that even of the few that were uploaded to the Board portal by schools, many schools had not entered their data correctly.

“The Board therefore appeals to the institutions through this channel to immediately upload the matriculation numbers, names, subjects, graduation years and other necessary details of the candidates so that the Board can process the condonation applications of the candidates.

“The Board reiterates that it is incumbent on the institutions to correctly enter the details of the candidates as presented in the notices issued to the institutions and published in the daily newspapers and on the Board’s website so that the retroactive admission notices of the candidates can be processed promptly and the candidates can get the necessary clearance for their hitherto under-awarded admissions.”
