The FG Releases N6bn for School Feeding Programme in 14 States


Federal Government Takes Action

The Federal Government of Nigeria has started fulfilling its promise to feed school children. Recently, on Sunday, July 13, 2017, the Presidency announced that N6,204,912,889 has been released to 14 states under the Social Investment Programmes (SIP) for the 2016/2017 academic year. Consequently, the National Homegrown School Feeding Programme is on track to feed three million primary school children this year.

States Benefiting from the Programme

Laolu Akande, the acting President’s media aide, confirmed the 14 states covered so far: Anambra, Enugu, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ebonyi, Zamfara, Delta, Abia, Benue, Plateau, Bauchi, Taraba, and Kaduna. Thus, 2,827,501 pupils are currently benefiting from the programme.

Breakdown of Payments and Pupils Fed

In detail:

Anambra: N693,013,300 for 103,742 children; 1,009 cooks employed.

Oyo: N490,296,800 for 107,983 children; 1,372 cooks employed.

Ogun: N1,042,217,400 for 231,660 children; 2,205 cooks employed.

Ebonyi: N344,633,100 for 163,137 children; 1,453 cooks employed.

Zamfara: N402,295,600 for 107,347 children; 1,127 cooks employed.

Delta: N225,896,300 for 141,663 children; 1,364 cooks employed.

Abia: N128,763,600 for 61,316 children; 750 cooks employed.

Benue: N337,157,800 for 240,827 children; 3,344 cooks employed.

Plateau: N133,187,600 for 95,134 children; 1,418 cooks employed.

Bauchi: N214,909,101 for 307,013 children; 3,261 cooks employed.

Taraba: N120,284,500 for 171,835 children; 2,596 cooks employed.

Kaduna: N499,985,500 for 835,508 children; 9,857 cooks employed.

Overall Impact

Overall, 33,895 cooks have been engaged across the 14 states. Moreover, the programme is expected to expand to more states and school children by the next academic session. Therefore, the Federal Government is steadily achieving its goal of providing nutritious meals to pupils nationwide.
