Etisalat Nigeria, once a leading player in the nation’s telecom sector, faced a major financial crisis in 2017. After failing to repay a massive N541 billion loan, a consortium of Nigerian and foreign banks—led by Access Bank Plc—took over the company’s management on June 15, 2017.
How Did It All Begin?
In 2013, Etisalat Nigeria borrowed $1.2 billion (approximately N541 billion) from 13 Nigerian banks, including:

The loan was meant to refinance an earlier $650 million debt and fund the expansion of Etisalat’s network infrastructure across Nigeria.
What Went Wrong?
According to Premium Times, Etisalat failed to meet repayment deadlines despite several negotiations. The Economic downturn and the devaluation of the Naira further worsened the company’s ability to fulfill its obligations.
As a result, EMTS Holding BV—Etisalat Nigeria’s major shareholder—was pressured to transfer 100% ownership of the company to United Capital Trustees Limited, the legal representative of the creditor banks. Etisalat Group, the parent company based in Abu Dhabi, confirmed the divestment via a statement on the Abu Dhabi Stock Exchange.
What About Etisalat Employees?
With the company under financial pressure and new management in place, staff job security became a major concern. Many worried that restructuring or staff layoffs would follow the takeover.
