EFCC Warns Chidi Odinkalu Over Comment on Bobrisky’s Arrest

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a strong warning to Chidi Odinkalu, the former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, over his comments on the arrest of Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky.

EFCC arrested Bobrisky for spraying and stepping on Naira notes worth over ₦400,000 at an event. The act violates Nigeria’s law against abuse of the national currency.

Bobrisky Appears in Court

EFCC took Bobrisky to court soon after the arrest. The judge adjourned the case until April 9, and Bobrisky will stay in EFCC custody until then.

The arrest sparked a wave of reactions online and offline. Many Nigerians debated whether EFCC should handle such cases.

Chidi Odinkalu Criticizes EFCC

Chidi Odinkalu reacted publicly. He described EFCC’s action as an “act of idleness” and an “abuse of power.” His statement spread quickly across social media and drew attention from both supporters and critics.

EFCC Responds to Odinkalu’s Remarks

EFCC replied through an official press statement on April 5, 2024, shared via its verified Twitter handle. The agency described Odinkalu’s comments as reckless and irresponsible.

“The EFCC has noticed the reckless commentaries made by Chidi Odinkalu about the arrest of Idris Okuneye (a.k.a Bobrisky), calling it an act of idleness or abuse of power,” the statement read.

The commission explained that it arrested and charged Bobrisky because he clearly violated Naira laws. EFCC noted that Bobrisky had pleaded guilty to the charges.

“Odinkalu has the right to speak,” the EFCC continued, “but he should express his opinions with respect and responsibility.”

EFCC Issues Warning

EFCC warned that it will take legal action against anyone who spreads false or disrespectful claims about its work. The agency insisted that its actions align with the law and its constitutional duties.

Psalm 121:7-8
"Give thanks to the Lord for He is good: His love endures forever."

“Odinkalu should express his opinions more responsibly in the future,” EFCC added.

Dele Oyewale, the Head of Media and Publicity, signed the statement.
