The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU Ile-Ife, Osun State, has announced Professor Adebayo Simeon Banire’s appointment as substantive Vice-Chancellor.
The appointment, according to the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Owelle Oscar Idoko, will take effect from June 7, 2022.
The term of the current vice chancellor, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, ended June 6, 2022.
The council chairman told a press conference at the Centre of Excellence on campus that Bamire was appointed after a thorough selection process from among 20 applicants.
He said, “As you know, the post of Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ile will become vacant on June 7, 2022.
“The council at its meeting on December 7, 2021 gave the go ahead for the appointment of a new vice chancellor who is expected to assume office on June 7, 2022.
“Consistent with the Council’s approval, the position has been widely advertised in accordance with relevant statutes and laws governing the appointment of the position.
“At a special meeting on February 14, 2022, the Council reviewed the resumes of all twenty (20) applicants who expressed interest in the position. In the end, sixteen (16) of them were shortlisted as they met the advertised criteria.

“Interviews with the candidates started on Monday, March 14, 2022 and ended on Wednesday, March 16, 2022. All sixteen candidates appeared before the Common Council and the Senate Selection Committee, with fifteen of them physically present and one virtually present at his request.
As required by law, the three candidates with the highest scores are forwarded to the Council for consideration, after carefully reviewing the resumes and interviewing each candidate.
The entire process of the Joint Selection Committee was observed by representatives of the Federal Character Commission, who confirmed that the process was fair, transparent, and conducted in full compliance with the provisions of the Federal Character Commission Act.
“In accordance with the provisions of the Universities Act as amended, the report of the Selection Committee was considered by the Council which after a careful and impartial review of the report resolved to appoint Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, Professor of Agricultural Economics in the Faculty of Agriculture, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, as Vice Chancellor of the University with effect from June 7, 2022. The decision of the Council will be referred to the Visitor of the University, His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari, through the Hon. Minister of Education.”
