Yahaya Bello Seeks Supreme Court Intervention

Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, has requested the Supreme Court to halt his arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This plea comes after the Appeal Court mandated him to appear before Justice Emeka Nwite at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Bello faces serious allegations of money laundering, accused of conspiring to unlawfully convert over N80 billion. He has firmly denied these allegations in a public statement. During the recent court session, Bello’s lawyer, A.M. Adoyi, informed Justice Nwite that they have filed an appeal with the Supreme Court to quash the arrest warrant issued against Bello.

Adoyi argued that proceeding with the arraignment before the Supreme Court’s decision could undermine the appeal. The EFCC’s attorney, Kemi Piniero, countered this by insisting that the criminal proceedings should continue, regardless of the appeal status. She emphasized that legal protocols require adherence, irrespective of pending appeals.

In previous court sessions, Bello’s absence raised concerns, leading to a bench warrant for his arrest. However, Bello’s media office claimed he visited the EFCC office recently. The EFCC confirmed this visit but clarified that he is not in their custody.

The Supreme Court is expected to rule on the matter by October 30, 2024. The ongoing legal battles reflect the complex intersection of governance and accountability in Nigeria.
