FG Notifies Nigerians Travelling to UK Amid Rising Violent Protests ABUJA — The Federal Government has advised Nigerian citizens planning to travel to the United Kingdom to be cautious of potential violence. The recent killing of three young girls at a concert has escalated tensions.

Government’s Warning
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Monday, August 5th. Spokesperson Amb. Eche Abu-Obe highlighted the increased risk of violence in the UK. The protests, sparked by the deaths, have turned violent, resulting in attacks on law enforcement agents and infrastructure damage. The Nigerian government emphasizes the need for travelers to remain vigilant and avoid areas where protests are ongoing.
“Demonstrations by far-right and other groups in parts of the UK have been large and unruly,” the statement read. “The deaths of the three girls have worsened anti-immigration sentiments, especially against Muslim immigrants and people of colour.”
Background of the Violence
On July 29, 2024, a knife attack at a children’s yoga and dance workshop resulted in three children’s deaths and eight injuries. Five of the injured children remain in critical condition. Two adults at the event were also critically injured. Anti-Muslim disinformation and rumours have since fueled Islamophobic protests and riots, described as the worst in 13 years.
The Financial Times reported that Islamophobia, crime concerns, anti-migration sentiment, xenophobia, nationalism, and perceived biases by the police and media have all contributed to the protests and riots.
Travel Advisory for Nigerians
Nigerians traveling to the UK should stay informed about the situation and follow guidance from local authorities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises travelers to register with the Nigerian High Commission in the UK upon arrival. This measure ensures that they receive timely updates and assistance if needed.
