Briefing State House correspondents at the end of the security meeting, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, described the hoisting of Russian flags in Nigerian cities as a treasonable offense. He emphasized that the military would not tolerate any actions undermining Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Crackdown on Foreign Flags

General Musa warned, “We will not accept anybody, any individual flying any foreign flag in Nigeria. That is a treasonable offense, and it will be viewed and treated as such.” He added that those responsible for the hoisting of foreign flags would face legal consequences.

Protests Turning Violent

General Musa acknowledged that the initially peaceful protests have escalated, with criminals taking advantage of the situation to loot and cause mayhem. “Initially, when the protest started, it was peaceful, but now criminals have taken over, and a lot of looting is taking place,” he said.

Military’s Stand on Coup Rumors

Addressing rumors of a possible coup, General Musa reaffirmed the military’s commitment to defending democracy. He stated, “Nigeria is a sovereign and democratic nation. All security agencies are here to defend democracy and ensure it continues to thrive. We will not accept anyone pushing for a change of government.”

Response to Allegations Against Soldiers

General Musa clarified the allegations that some soldiers participated in the looting. “We have investigated thoroughly, and there is nothing like such. The soldiers were actually clearing away items from looted areas,” he explained.
