BREAKING NEWS: Gunmen Attack EFCC Office in Abuja

In the early hours of Wednesday, August 16, 2017, a group of armed men attacked the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Wuse Zone 7, Abuja.
According to Wilson Uwajaren, the EFCC spokesperson, the attackers arrived around 05:00 am and immediately opened fire at the building.
Although the intruders attempted to gain entry, security officials on duty acted quickly and stopped them.
As a result, the gunmen fled the scene.
Gunmen Leave Behind a Threat Letter
Before escaping, the attackers dropped a white envelope containing a direct death threat addressed to
Ishaku Sharu, a senior EFCC investigator.
He currently leads several high-profile corruption cases involving politically exposed individuals and retired military officers.
This threat clearly suggests that the attack was not random but targeted.
Furthermore, the EFCC revealed that this was not an isolated incident. Only a few weeks earlier, another investigator,
Austin Okwor, was shot and wounded by unknown assailants in Port Harcourt.
These repeated threats show a growing pattern of intimidation against anti-corruption officers.
Damage to Vehicles and Security Response
During the attack, multiple gunshots hit vehicles parked within the agency’s compound.
Fortunately, no fatalities were recorded because the security team acted swiftly.
Their coordinated response forced the gunmen to retreat in a waiting getaway vehicle.
Consequently, the attackers were unable to penetrate the main building.
Police Begin Full Investigation
Uwajaren confirmed that the EFCC has reported the incident to the Nigeria Police Force for a comprehensive investigation.
Authorities are now working to identify the attackers, trace their escape route, and understand their motive.
Since the attack appears connected to ongoing corruption investigations, security agencies are expected to intensify protection for EFCC personnel.
This incident highlights the increasing risks faced by anti-corruption officers across Nigeria.
As investigations progress, Nigerians hope that the perpetrators will be arrested and brought to justice.
Moreover, many citizens are calling for stronger security around national institutions to prevent similar attacks in the future.
