Strike in the University of Ibadan Halts Academic Activities

Academic activities at the University of Ibadan (UI) stopped on Monday after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared an indefinite nationwide strike. Both postgraduate and undergraduate programmes were affected immediately.

Postgraduate examinations were canceled, and undergraduate students found themselves without lectures. Many students roamed their faculties and departments, discussing the sudden development and expressing concern about when classes might resume.

Most students and lecturers showed frustration over the strike. Several academic offices remained locked, and some lecturers avoided interacting with students. One lecturer reportedly said to a student, “Why are you still here? Have you not heard that ASUU declared a nationwide strike? I cannot accept your project file because we have been told to suspend project supervision.”

Students voiced disappointment, emphasizing that the timing of the strike was particularly disruptive. One student said, “We have already lost time to past strikes and protests. We don’t know when classes will resume. ASUU should reconsider their actions.”

The strike also affected private businesses on campus. Traders complained that students, who form their main customer base, would leave, reducing sales. One vendor said, “I am in trouble. Students are heading home, and nobody will buy my goods until the strike ends.”

A business centre operator echoed the concerns. “We have to close and wait indefinitely. Nobody will come in for photocopies or printouts. This situation is very challenging,” they said.
