Breaking News: ASUU Begins Indefinite Nationwide Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced an indefinite nationwide strike.

Dr. Biodun Ogunyemi, the National President of ASUU, announced the action early Monday during a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja.

He explained that during the strike, lecturers will suspend teaching, halt examinations, and refrain from attending statutory meetings in all ASUU branches across Nigeria.

The decision follows a nationwide consultation with union members at an emergency NEC meeting on Saturday, August 12, 2017. Dr. Ogunyemi said the strike would take effect immediately, starting Sunday, August 13, 2017.

He added that the government has not fully implemented the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement or the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding. Other related demands raised by the union also remain unaddressed, prompting the indefinite industrial action.
