Senate Tells Protesters: “Leave Buhari Alone, He Has Violated No Law”

Protests Over President Buhari’s Medical Vacation
Following President Muhammadu Buhari’s long medical vacation in London since May 7, some individuals and groups staged protests demanding that he either returns to duty or resigns. Led by musician Charles Oputa, popularly known as ‘Charly Boy’, the coalition of civil society and pro-democracy groups called “OurMumuDonDo” urged the National Assembly to take action regarding the President’s health status.
Senate Responds to Protesters
The Senate, however, cautioned all sponsors and participants of the protests against escalating tensions in the country. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Senate spokesman, stated that protesters should not divert the Presidency’s focus from pressing economic and security issues. He emphasized that the President had fully complied with the Constitution by informing both chambers of the National Assembly and handing over duties to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo during his absence.
No Legal Violation
Abdullahi explained, “The President has broken no law. There is no justification for this diversion and noise making. Protest sponsors are merely seeking cheap publicity at the expense of Nigeria’s peace. The Federal Government is functioning, and Acting President Yemi Osinbajo is providing required leadership.” He urged Nigerians to focus on praying for Buhari’s safe return and praised governors and party leaders who recently visited him in London.
Call for Patriotism Over Activism
The Senate called on protesters to end demonstrations and prioritize patriotism over activism. Abdullahi added, “Join other Nigerians to pray for the President, the Acting President, and the country during this critical period.”
Charly Boy’s Concerns
Despite the Senate’s warnings, Charles Oputa and the coalition continued to demand transparency regarding the President’s health. They criticized the National Assembly for failing to investigate or establish a panel to ascertain Buhari’s condition, claiming that legislators were compromised and aligned with cabal interests within the Presidency.
