If you are in Nigeria or planning to visit, be aware that the country is currently experiencing high levels of police brutality. Multiple reports and videos on social media show citizens being harassed, assaulted, and extorted by police officers.
In Delta State, one citizen was reportedly shot dead in Asaba over a ₦100 bribery dispute.

In Port Harcourt, a mature man on his way to church was flogged and slapped publicly by a policeman, despite committing no offense.

Another victim narrated how police kidnapped him, took him to the bush, and demanded ₦100,000 under threat of death. Soldiers driving by eventually rescued him. Many commenters confirmed they have also experienced similar incidents of police kidnapping.
In a separate incident, a young man filmed a police officer illegally checking his phone, even after the General of Police banned officers from inspecting citizens’ phones. The officer was seen attempting to destroy the young man’s phone.
Car owners are reportedly major targets of extortion. According to citizens, police officers now operate in ways that are sometimes considered worse than armed robbers, using guns and threats to intimidate young people.
