The National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, launched by the Federal Government of Nigeria, continues to gain momentum across the country. Initially announced on September 3, 2015, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo described the initiative as a game-changer that would not only feed millions of schoolchildren but also create over 1.14 million jobs and boost local food production.

By January 22, 2017, the Federal Government had begun implementing the program, releasing ₦375 million to feed 700,000 primary school pupils across five states. This strategic step aimed to provide children with at least one nutritious meal per school day to improve learning, health, and school attendance.
Katsina State Expansion
Fast-forward to June 18, 2017, and reports from The Punch revealed that over one million pupils in Katsina State would benefit from the programme. This massive rollout underscores the government’s intent to invest in the future of Nigerian children.
Hajiya Binta Abba, Special Adviser on Girl-Child Education and Child Development to Governor Aminu Masari, made the announcement at a one-day workshop in Katsina. The event targeted key stakeholders, such as:
-
Local Government Unit Heads of Nutrition
-
Environmental Sanitation Officers
-
Health Educators
-
Education Secretaries from the 34 Local Education Authorities
According to her, the feeding initiative will cover primary school pupils from Class One to Class Three, providing them with free meals every school day. She emphasized that this effort is not just about nutrition; it is expected to increase school enrollment and reduce the number of out-of-school children.
Praises from Leadership
Alhaji Mouktar Lugga, in his remarks, applauded both the state and federal governments for their commitment. He noted that programmes like these significantly improve the standard of living, especially for families in rural and underserved communities.
A Catalyst for Change
Clearly, the school feeding programme is more than a welfare scheme—it is a strategic investment in Nigeria’s educational system and economy. By supporting local farmers, empowering food vendors, and keeping children in school, the government aims to build a stronger, healthier, and more educated society.
