Nine people who were aboard a Golf Wagon were killed on Saturday in Gwarzo, Kano, when the vehicle crashed into an embankment.
The Kano State Fire Service Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi, who confirmed the incident, said, “On Saturday, November 19, 2022, the State Fire Service received a distress call at about 6:45pm from one Ali Faci.
“Faci reported an incident at Fada Dam, Gwarzo Local Government Area, Dayi Road, adding that firefighters were mobilized from Gwarzo Fire Station and arrived at the scene at about 7:10pm.
“They discovered that an unregistered Golf Wagon from Kano on its way to Katsina had crashed into Fada Dam. Twelve unidentified persons were rescued on the spot.
The victims of the accident were two girls aged about six months, four females aged about 30, 28, 27 and 25 years and six males aged about 48, 45, 42, 40, 35 and 28 years.
With the help of local fishermen, firefighters managed to recover three people alive, while nine other victims, who were unconscious, were taken to the General Hospital of Gwarzo for medical care, where doctors, however, confirmed their death.
According to an eyewitness, one of the victims was still in the dam at the time of writing and promised that the search for the missing victim would continue until he was rescued.
