Police in Maiduguri, Borno State, have arrested a teacher who allegedly assaulted a four-year-old primary school student in Maiduguri.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Sani Kamilu Shatambaya, confirmed the arrest to journalists in Maiduguri on Saturday, November 25, 2022.
“The case is with the police and the teacher has been arrested,” Shatambaya told journalists on the phone, continuing, “We are conducting a thorough and objective investigation into the matter and will take it to court later.”
The victim’s father, Hassan Dala, accused the teacher of hiding his daughter under her veil and using her finger to defile her.
“It happened at Golden Olive Academy in Maiduguri,” Dala recalled.
“The academy is a preschool and an elementary school.
“The teacher usually put my daughter in her veil and forced her to suck on her while she put her finger in my daughter’s private parts,” the father told the press almost tearfully.
One day, the mother observed the toddler’s condition while bathing her. It complained of pain in the intimate area, but the mother ignored it at first and dismissed it as normal.
When the complaints persisted, the mother noticed blood in the child’s urine and brought it to my attention. We took her to a private clinic in Bulumkutu, the Miyetti Clinic, where a doctor advised us to investigate the incident.
“An examination at Umaru Shehu Hospital confirmed the penetration of the child’s private parts,” reported the depressed and angry father.
He called on Governor Zulum to intervene in terms of the Prohibition of Violence Against Persons Act and the Child Pantyhose Act to ensure justice for his child.
The coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission for Borno State, Jummai Usman Mshelia, confirmed knowledge of the case.
“The teachers of the school were paraded and the student pointed to a particular teacher,” Mshelia said.
She said the teacher had a habit of distributing chocolates to students. “And it was alleged that the teacher used the same bait to lure the child.”
